Consumers mobilizing markets

You can help global efforts for ocean conservation by taking personal responsibility for what you choose to put on your plate. The SeaChoice program was designed for Canadians with information about our domestic fisheries and the seafood we import.

Download your own copies of Canada’s Seafood Guide to help you choose ocean-friendly seafood. You can also download SeaChoice drop cards for your wallet to gently encourage your favourite establishments to source sustainable seafood. Please contact us directly via info@seachoice.org if your organization would like copies of these products.

In Canada’s Seafood Guide, green-listed fisheries present best options while red-listed fisheries should be avoided. Species listed in the yellow section of the card should be consumed in moderation or when green choices are not available. To correctly identify what fishery your seafood comes from, you will need to ask:

  • What type of seafood is this?
  • Where was it fished or farmed?
  • How was it caught or farmed?

You can be a part of ocean conservation by learning more about the status of your favourite seafood, by supporting the sustainable fisheries listed as green choices and by sharing your knowledge with friends and family.

You may be interested to know that the SeaChoice program ranks seafood according to five sustainability criteria:

  1. The vulnerability of the species fished.
  2. The status or health of the stock.
  3. The catch of unwanted species.
  4. Ecosystem or habitat damage caused by fishing.
  5. Effectiveness of management

Seafood is then given an overall colour ranking. Click here to understand more about SeaChoice assessments.
